Nigeria Customs Volleyball Teams Top Premier League First Phase

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded another sporting milestone as its men’s and women’s volleyball teams finished the first phase of the 2026 Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League at the top of their respective standings.

The third edition of the league, held from June 15 to 27 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, featured 26 teams from across the country.

The Customs men’s team maintained an unbeaten record throughout the first phase, winning all 12 matches to finish with the maximum 36 points. The women’s team also emerged leaders with 34 points despite suffering a narrow five-set defeat to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Spikers in their final match.

Reacting to the achievement, the Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs Sulaiman Chiroma, congratulated the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the management team, attributing the success to the Service’s sustained investment in sports development.

He said the players had justified the support they received through their impressive performances.

“The investment of the Comptroller-General and the management is something we are proud of, and the players have shown their appreciation through their performances. Finishing the first phase on top of both tables tells us that the investment is yielding results,” Chiroma said.

He noted that the Service’s ambition extends beyond domestic success, adding that preparations would continue during the league break to strengthen both teams for future continental competitions through improved coaching, athlete welfare, quality equipment and international exposure.

The impressive performances of the Customs teams also earned national recognition, with the Nigeria Volleyball Federation inviting 20 NCS players to the national camp ahead of the 2026 African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Africa Nations Cup qualifiers scheduled to hold from July 13 to 23 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Nigeria Customs Service produced the highest number of invited players, including Adeniyi Favour, Jaiyeola Abdulquadri, Emmanuel Udah, Okonkwo Kingsley, Anele Timothy, Kazeem Mutiu, Abednego Hassan and Tiamiyu Ismail.

With both teams leading the league standings and contributing the largest contingent to the national team, the Nigeria Customs Service will head into the second phase of the competition aiming to secure both league titles while continuing to produce athletes capable of representing Nigeria on the continental stage.
