Hushpuppi: From Lavish Lifestyle to 11-Year US Prison Sentence

Ramon Abbas, widely known as Hushpuppi, rose to global fame on social media by flaunting an extravagant lifestyle that featured private jets, luxury cars, designer fashion and high-end vacations, earning millions of followers and becoming one of Nigeria’s most talked-about internet personalities.

Before his arrest, Hushpuppi maintained that his wealth came from legitimate businesses, including real estate and investments, while projecting the image of a successful luxury influencer.

His fortunes changed dramatically in June 2020 when he was arrested in Dubai during a coordinated operation by Dubai Police following years of investigations by United States authorities into an alleged international cybercrime network.

According to investigators, Dubai Police seized about $40 million in cash, 13 luxury vehicles, as well as multiple mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices during the operation.

US prosecutors later alleged that more than $300 million was laundered through international cyber fraud schemes over an 18-month period, with Hushpuppi accused of playing a major role in laundering the illicit proceeds.

In 2021, Hushpuppi pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering in the United States.

In November 2022, a US federal court sentenced him to 135 months (more than 11 years) in prison.

The case has remained one of the most high-profile cybercrime prosecutions involving a Nigerian and is often cited as a cautionary tale about the consequences of financial crime.

The story returned to public attention recently after Nigerian music star Davido spoke about Hushpuppi during an interview, describing him as a friend and expressing hope for his release after serving his sentence.

“I just see him around; I never really knew what he was doing. But he lived a good life,” Davido said, while offering prayers for Hushpuppi.
