The Borno State Government has approved the release of N1.649 billion to settle outstanding scholarship obligations, tuition fees, student welfare packages and international education commitments.
The Executive Secretary of the Borno State Scholarships Board, Dr. Bala Isa, disclosed this at a press conference on Tuesday in Maiduguri.
He said the approval underscores Governor Babagana Zulum’s commitment to investing in education as a key strategy for rebuilding the state and empowering young people.
According to Dr. Isa, the funds will cover outstanding scholarship awards for the 2024/2025 academic session for students studying in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions across the country.
He explained that the intervention also includes payment of tuition and accommodation fees for 272 medical students at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, as well as tuition fees for 34 MBBS students at Al-Ansar University.
The package also provides for the payment of fees for 60 students enrolled at the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology.
In addition, the government approved six months’ allowances for nursing students under the state scholarship programme, educational support for 300 orphans of counter-insurgency volunteers, and return air tickets for postgraduate and undergraduate scholarship beneficiaries studying in India, Malaysia and China.
Dr. Isa described the beneficiaries as future doctors, engineers, scientists and other professionals whose knowledge and expertise would contribute to the long-term development of Borno State.
He noted that the Scholarships Board has commenced the necessary administrative processes to ensure the timely disbursement of funds to both institutions and beneficiaries.
The Executive Secretary commended Governor Zulum for sustaining investments in education despite prevailing challenges, stressing that scholarship programmes and skills development remain central to the administration’s vision of building a peaceful, prosperous and well-educated Borno State.
