From Date Collector to Philanthropist: The Remarkable Journey of Sulaiman Al Rajhi

Few success stories illustrate the power of hard work, resilience and generosity like that of Saudi Arabian businessman Sulaiman Abdul Aziz Al Rajhi, whose journey from poverty to global prominence has inspired millions around the world.

Born in 1929 in the Al Bukayriyah area of Saudi Arabia’s Qassim Province, Al Rajhi grew up in a modest family during a period when the Kingdom was still developing economically. As a young boy, he worked various menial jobs to support himself and his family, including collecting and selling dates, earning as little as six Saudi Riyals a month.

Despite limited formal education and humble beginnings, Al Rajhi developed a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial mindset at an early age. Alongside his brothers, he ventured into money exchange and small-scale trading during the 1940s, laying the foundation for what would later become one of the Middle East’s largest financial institutions.

Their business gradually expanded into banking, culminating in the establishment of Al Rajhi Bank, which has grown into one of the world’s largest Islamic banks and a leading financial institution operating across Saudi Arabia and several international markets.

Beyond banking, Al Rajhi invested in agriculture, real estate, manufacturing and other sectors, building a vast business empire that made him one of the richest individuals in the Arab world. At the peak of his fortune, his net worth was estimated at around 16 billion US dollars.

However, what distinguishes Sulaiman Al Rajhi from many of the world’s wealthiest entrepreneurs is not only the fortune he built but the decision he made later in life.

In one of the largest philanthropic acts by a private individual, Al Rajhi transferred the overwhelming majority of his wealth into charitable endowments (waqf), dedicating billions of dollars to education, healthcare, religious initiatives, humanitarian programmes and poverty alleviation.

The move effectively removed him from the ranks of the world’s billionaires, as he voluntarily gave away much of the fortune he spent decades building.

His charitable foundation continues to support numerous projects within Saudi Arabia and beyond, focusing on sustainable development, community welfare and social impact.

Al Rajhi’s life story has become a symbol of determination, entrepreneurship and generosity, demonstrating that success is not solely measured by financial achievement but also by the positive impact one leaves on society.

From earning a few Riyals as a young date collector to becoming a global business leader and one of the world’s most respected philanthropists, Sulaiman Al Rajhi’s journey continues to inspire entrepreneurs and future generations across the world.

His legacy serves as a reminder that while wealth can create opportunity, its greatest value often lies in how it is used to improve the lives of others.
