305 Nigerians Evacuated from South Africa Arrive Lagos

No fewer than 305 Nigerians have returned to the country from South Africa under the Federal Government’s evacuation programme following renewed xenophobic attacks and security concerns affecting foreign nationals.

The returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, aboard an Air Peace flight from Johannesburg.

They constitute the fifth batch of Nigerians evacuated by the Federal Government amid growing concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.

The evacuation flight landed at about 11:28 a.m., after experiencing a delay of approximately five hours before departing Johannesburg.

Many of the returnees expressed relief and gratitude on arrival after safely returning home.

Officials of the Federal Government, the Nigeria Immigration Service and other relevant agencies were on hand at the airport to receive the evacuees and facilitate documentation, medical screening and other arrival procedures.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives and welfare of Nigerians living abroad, assuring that it would continue to provide necessary assistance to citizens affected by the recent incidents.

It also stated that diplomatic engagements with the South African Government would continue with a view to addressing the recurring cases of xenophobic violence and ensuring the safety and protection of Nigerians residing in the country.
