The Gambia Holds Historic First Tripartite Conference to Strengthen Democratic Governance

The Gambia has recorded a significant milestone in its democratic journey as the country’s three arms of government—the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary—convened their first-ever Tripartite Conference on the Commonwealth Latimer House Principles.

The landmark meeting was attended by President Adama Barrow, alongside senior representatives of the Executive, National Assembly and Judiciary, in a move aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation and reinforcing democratic governance.

The conference centred on promoting collaboration among the three branches of government while upholding the principles of accountability, the separation of powers, constitutionalism and the rule of law.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to the Commonwealth Latimer House Principles, which provide a framework for maintaining a healthy balance between the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary to safeguard democracy, good governance and judicial independence.

Speaking at the event, President Barrow underscored the importance of dialogue and mutual respect among state institutions in advancing national development and preserving democratic values.

The conference also highlighted the need for sustained cooperation, transparency and adherence to constitutional responsibilities as essential pillars for strengthening public confidence in governance.
