FG Adopts Kaduna’s Household Mapping Model to Tackle Out-of-School Children Nationwide

The Federal Government has adopted Kaduna State’s innovative household mapping model as a national framework for identifying and addressing the challenge of out-of-school children across Nigeria.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, CON, described the decision as a landmark recognition of his administration’s commitment to evidence-based governance and data-driven policymaking.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during a meeting with Governor Sani at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

Governor Sani explained that Kaduna State developed the household mapping initiative to move beyond estimates and obtain accurate data on out-of-school children, including their locations and households. The data has enabled the state government to design targeted interventions and direct resources to communities where they are most needed.

According to the Governor, the initiative has contributed to reducing the estimated number of out-of-school children in Kaduna State from about 550,000 to fewer than 180,000.

He said the adoption of the model at the national level would provide the Federal Government and other stakeholders with a reliable basis for identifying children who are out of school, enrolling them and ensuring that they remain within the education system.

Governor Sani commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also applauded the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, for their leadership and decision to scale up the Kaduna model nationwide.

“When sound data informs policy and guides investment, governments are better equipped to identify, enrol and retain every child in school,” the Governor said.

He reaffirmed Kaduna State’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Bureau of Statistics and development partners to strengthen the initiative and expand access to quality education.

Governor Sani stressed that a data-driven approach would help Nigeria build a more inclusive education system, ensure that public resources reach those who need them most and advance the goal of leaving no child behind.
