The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding strategic defence cooperation with the Republic of Burundi as part of efforts to strengthen regional peace, enhance military professionalism and improve Africa’s collective response to terrorism and other transnational security threats.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, gave the assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Ambassador of the Republic of Burundi to Nigeria, His Excellency Edouard Nduwimana, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Welcoming the Burundian delegation, the COAS described Nigeria and Burundi as long-standing partners united by shared African values, mutual respect and a common commitment to promoting peace and security across the continent.
Lieutenant General Shaibu said the Nigerian Army remains committed to broadening bilateral military cooperation through enhanced training opportunities, institutional capacity building, personnel exchange programmes and strategic exposure visits aimed at improving the operational capabilities of both armed forces.
He stressed that sustained collaboration in military education, operational experience sharing and regional security initiatives remains critical to addressing terrorism, violent extremism and other emerging cross-border threats. The Army Chief also commended Burundi’s progress in promoting peace, stability and national reconciliation, while calling for continued military engagements to strengthen bilateral relations.
In his remarks, Ambassador Edouard Nduwimana conveyed the goodwill of the President of Burundi, General Évariste Ndayishimiye, and praised the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and significant contributions to regional peace, counter-terrorism operations and security across Africa.
The Ambassador sought greater access for Burundian military personnel to Nigerian military institutions through scholarships, specialised training and other capacity-building programmes. He also advocated expanded instructor exchange initiatives, joint military exercises and closer collaboration in peace support operations and counter-terrorism.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Nigeria and Burundi to strengthening defence cooperation, enhancing military capacity and promoting lasting peace, stability and security across Africa.
