SGF Akume Receives Christian Icon Award at CAN’s 50th Anniversary
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has received the Christian Icon Award from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in recognition of his contributions to public service and commitment to Christian values.
Akume received the award on Saturday at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, during CAN’s 50th anniversary celebration, describing the honour as a humbling affirmation of faith, integrity, compassion, sacrifice and service.
He said the recognition went beyond his record in public service, noting that it reflected the enduring values that had guided his journey in leadership. He accepted the award on behalf of his family, colleagues, associates and Nigerians he had served.
The SGF commended CAN for its contributions to the Christian community and the nation over the past five decades, particularly in promoting faith, peace, unity, moral values and national cohesion.
He stressed that religious institutions have an important role to play in promoting tolerance, compassion, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship, especially as Nigeria and other countries face complex challenges.
According to Akume, the Christian faith teaches that leadership is about sacrifice rather than privilege, and contribution rather than personal gain. He added that he had always regarded public office as an opportunity to serve the people.
“As Secretary to the Government of the Federation, I remain profoundly conscious of the enormous responsibility entrusted to me by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and of the duty to contribute to the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda and to the building of a more prosperous, peaceful and united Nigeria,” he said.
Akume dedicated the award to Nigerians who serve their communities and the country selflessly, often without recognition, as well as to young Nigerians whose energy and creativity represent the nation’s future.
He congratulated CAN on its golden jubilee and expressed hope that the Association’s next 50 years would bring greater achievements and deeper contributions to peace, stability and national development.
The SGF reaffirmed his commitment to more diligent service, humble leadership and the promotion of unity, peace and progress, praying for God’s continued blessings on CAN and Nigeria.
The award ceremony formed part of activities marking CAN’s 50 years of service to the Church and the nation.
