President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic 2-1 victory over Japan in Saturday’s final to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, Morocco.
The President described the triumph as a proud moment for Nigeria and a major milestone for African women’s football, noting that the Flamingos had made history as the first African team to win the competition.
In a congratulatory message issued on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Tinubu said he received the news upon returning from campaign engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.
He praised the young players for their courage, discipline, determination and teamwork, saying their achievement had given Nigerians another reason to celebrate.
The President noted that he had followed the team’s progress throughout the tournament and recalled their promise to bring the trophy home after defeating their opponents in the semi-final.
He said the players had fulfilled that promise by believing in themselves, supporting one another and carrying Nigeria’s flag to the top of world football.
Tinubu particularly applauded Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku, whose goals secured the historic victory, while commending the entire squad for their outstanding performance throughout the competition.
He also congratulated the coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission for their contributions to the team’s success.
The President described the victory as an inspiration to millions of young Nigerian girls, demonstrating that hard work, determination and opportunities could help them achieve greatness.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in grassroots sports development and creating more opportunities for young Nigerians, particularly girls, to discover and develop their talents.
Tinubu concluded by congratulating the Flamingos for making Nigeria proud and writing their names in the country’s sporting history.
