ABU Honours Female Students for Winning Huawei ICT Global Competition in China

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has honoured four outstanding female students who emerged Grand Prize winners at the 2025–2026 Huawei ICT Competition Global Final held in Shenzhen, China.

The students received international recognition after developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered solution designed to diagnose malaria parasites in underserved communities, showcasing the potential of technology to address critical healthcare challenges.

The recognition ceremony, organised by the Women Leading Change in Africa (WLCA) Project under the IIOE Nigeria National Centre, was held on Tuesday at the Yusufu Bala Usman Hall, ABU, Zaria.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adamu Ahmed, commended the students for their remarkable achievement, describing it as proof that Nigerian students can compete successfully on the global stage.

He disclosed that the university is taking steps to secure a patent for the innovation, commercialise the technology, and facilitate advanced training and research opportunities for the students through one of ABU’s partner institutions in China.

Professor Ahmed said the university remains committed to supporting innovation, research and technological development that can provide practical solutions to societal challenges.

Also speaking, the Project Coordinator of the Women Leading Change in Africa (WLCA) Project and Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, Dr. Basira Yahaya, described the students’ success as a testament to resilience, innovation and the growing impact of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

She noted that the achievement highlights the limitless potential of young women in advancing technological solutions to global problems.

The event featured a keynote presentation on opportunities in STEM, goodwill messages from university management, a documentary showcasing the students’ award-winning project, and the presentation of awards in recognition of their outstanding accomplishment on the international stage.
