3 Division Nigerian Army Inaugurates General Court Martial to Ensure Disciplinary Standards
In a concerted effort to maintain discipline and uphold professionalism within the military, Headquarters 3 Division Nigerian Army inaugurated a General Court Martial at Rhino Officers Mess, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, the Plateau State Capital.
Convened by Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), the court aims to address various offences and unprofessional conduct involving officers and soldiers.
Brigadier General Liafis Bello mni, the President of the General Court Martial, emphasised the paramount importance of discipline, regimentation, and professionalism in the Nigerian Army. He highlighted that the timely convening of the court underscores the need to ensure compliance with the Military Justice system.
Reading the convening order, Brigadier General Bello stressed that “all court proceedings would adhere to the principles of natural justice, equity, and fairness,” thereby urging the legal officers to remain committed to the pursuit of unhindered justice and fairness.
Major Aminu Mansur Mairuwa, the lead prosecution and Acting Deputy Director Legal Services 3 Division, emphasised the role of the Court Martial in enforcing discipline, professionalism, and regimentation in the execution of military duties. He revealed that “an officer and 16 soldiers would face trial for offences related to murder, arms dealing, and other serious charges.” This, he asserted, demonstrates the Nigerian Army’s commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct and accountability in line with international best practices and the rule of law.
The Judge Advocate, Major Nasir Abdullahi, affirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering dedication to upholding the values of discipline and professionalism. He stated that the General Court Martial serves as evidence of the military authority’s commitment, especially 3 Division, to justice and integrity within the military ranks.
Barrister Azi Aware, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, represented by Barrister Solomon, commended the Nigerian Army for employing internal mechanisms like the General Court Martial to address the excesses of erring personnel. He expressed confidence that this would boost public trust in the military’s ability to professionally protect law-abiding citizens. The association pledged its support for the timely trial of the accused persons and the swift dispensation of justice.
The event included the inauguration and swearing-in of the President of 3 Div General Court Martial, Judge Advocate, and other court officials.
