The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has paid glowing tribute to one of its past presidents and literary icon, Honourable Dr. Wale Okediran, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as a towering figure whose impact transcends the literary world.

In a joint statement signed by ANA President, Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and General Secretary, Dame Joan Oji, the association highlighted Dr. Okediran’s enduring legacy, both as a writer and as a literary administrator whose efforts have significantly shaped Nigeria’s and Africa’s literary landscapes.

“Honourable Dr. Okediran’s contributions to ANA and the literary world are invaluable,” the statement read. “We celebrate his unwavering commitment to literature, nation-building, and community development.”

Dr. Okediran, who served as President of ANA and currently serves as Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA), was lauded for key milestones in his career, including facilitating the first World Organisation of Writers’ Congress in Abuja and showcasing the state-of-the-art Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village. He also brought the PAWA Congress to Nigeria and attracted the UNESCO Nigeria Country Representative to the Writers’ Village.

A former member of the Nigerian House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007, Dr. Okediran was commended for using his legislative platform to advocate for healthcare improvements and other people-centred policies. His experience in Parliament birthed his widely acclaimed novel, Tenants of the House, a fictional but poignant depiction of Nigeria’s legislative space.

Beyond politics and literary activism, Dr. Okediran is the founder of the Ebedi International Writers’ Residency, established in 2010 to offer a serene space for writers to develop their craft. He also initiated the Read Across Nigeria (RAN) project, aimed at promoting a robust reading culture across the country.

As a prolific author, Dr. Okediran’s notable works include The Menace, Shades of Corruption, Dreams Die at Twilight, and After the Flood. His writing, often infused with social commentary and satire, reflects a deep engagement with cultural and historical issues.

“His legacy stretches far beyond his books,” ANA stated. “He is a mentor to young writers, a visionary leader, and a relentless promoter of literary excellence. We at ANA rejoice with our own, and wish him many more years of health, fulfilment, and prosperity.”

The tribute concluded with heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Okediran on reaching the milestone age of 70, with ANA expressing pride in his accomplishments and optimism for his continued impact on the global literary stage.
