A physical confrontation broke out in Armenia’s parliament after ruling-party and opposition lawmakers exchanged insults during a heated debate over a proposed “Ministry of Sex”.
Footage of the incident showed lawmakers throwing punches, grabbing one another’s clothing and hurling a chair. One lawmaker was also seen pouring water over another during the confrontation. The incident was reportedly the third parliamentary clash in a matter of days.
The dispute centred on a proposal attributed to members of the opposition Strong Armenia party, described in the report as pro-Russian. They reportedly suggested establishing the ministry after claiming that a lack of sexual satisfaction was driving women towards political activism. The proposal was presented as an initiative to leave “no unsatisfied women”, but was rejected by the ruling Civil Contract party.
Tensions escalated when Civil Contract MP Taron Chakhoyan demanded an apology over the remarks while addressing lawmakers from the podium. He also accused opposition figures of corruption and criticised the involvement of members of Narek Karapetyan’s family in politics.
Addressing Karapetyan, Chakhoyan said it was not his fault that several members of his extended family, including his uncle, father and cousin, were involved in politics. He further criticised the alleged proposal to establish a ministry aimed at satisfying women, insisting that an apology was owed to them.
Karapetyan reportedly responded by describing Chakhoyan as a “mess from head to toe”, triggering a confrontation as lawmakers rushed towards the podium.
According to The Telegraph, Deputy Parliamentary Speaker Vahagn Aleksanyan threw a red leather chair, while Chakhoyan poured water over opposition MP Garnik Davtyan. One participant was also seen removing his jacket and placing it over a wooden barrier before joining the fight.
