British Artist Creates Microscopic ‘Last Supper’ Inside Eye of a Needle

British artist Willard Wigan has created an extraordinary miniature version of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, with Jesus and the 12 disciples individually sculpted small enough to fit inside the eye of a needle.

The remarkable artwork was created under a microscope, with each figure measuring only around the width of a human hair. Wigan also used an eyelash as a tiny paintbrush to add colour and detail to the figures.

Wigan’s micro-sculptures require exceptional patience and precision. He works between his heartbeats and controls his breathing to keep his hands steady enough to manipulate the tiny materials without damaging them.

The artist was appointed an MBE in 2007 for his services to art. He has also held Guinness World Records for the smallest handmade sculpture, including a tiny 24-carat gold motorcycle and, later, a human foetus measuring just 0.078 by 0.053 millimetres.

His Last Supper is among his most celebrated works, demonstrating how extraordinary detail can be achieved on a microscopic scale.

Wigan’s work offers a striking reminder that remarkable things can exist in places too small for the naked eye to notice — and that patience, precision and persistence can turn something almost invisible into a work of art.
