The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, led Nigeria’s delegation to the 2026 African Chiefs of Defence Conference (ACHOD), held in Luanda, Angola, from June 30 to July 2.

The conference was jointly hosted by the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) and the Angolan Armed Forces, bringing together senior military leaders from across Africa and international partners to discuss emerging security challenges and strategies for promoting peace, stability and economic development on the continent.

ACHOD serves as a key platform for African defence chiefs to address shared security threats, strengthen regional cooperation and promote long-term investments that support peace and sustainable development.

This year’s conference focused on tackling transnational crimes, countering disinformation, and promoting the responsible use of emerging technologies, including drones, in modern military operations.

Speaking during the conference, General Oluyede stressed the need for Africa to develop a resilient and adaptive security architecture capable of responding to both current and emerging threats.

He also highlighted the importance of strengthening regional intelligence sharing, improving integrated border management, revitalising security systems, enhancing defence partnerships, and cutting off terrorism financing and external support for criminal groups.

The Chief of Defence Staff commended the defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States, describing it as a valuable collaboration that has improved the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and contributed to regional security efforts.

On the sidelines of the conference, General Oluyede held bilateral meetings with fellow Chiefs of Defence and other strategic partners to strengthen cooperation against security threats that transcend national borders.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirmed the country’s commitment to regional partnerships, intelligence sharing and joint military operations as essential tools for combating terrorism, violent extremism, drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.

The military said Nigeria would continue to leverage international platforms such as the African Chiefs of Defence Conference to enhance cooperation, improve interoperability among African armed forces and promote lasting peace and security across West Africa and the continent.
