Chad Invites President Tinubu to Africa Water Summit

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has received a special envoy from the President of Chad, who delivered an invitation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to participate in the forthcoming Africa Water Summit.

The special envoy, Tahir Hammid Nguilin, met with the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister in Abuja on Monday, June 29, 2026, and delivered a special message from Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.

During the meeting, Nguilin formally presented a letter inviting President Tinubu to attend the Africa Water Summit, which will officially launch the Water Forward Initiative in Africa, a programme being implemented in partnership with the World Bank and other multilateral development partners.

According to the Chadian minister, the summit is designed to elevate water security as a key continental priority by mobilising sustainable financing for water resources, irrigation, sanitation, agriculture and livestock development.

He explained that participating countries are expected to sign country-specific partnership agreements with the World Bank and other development partners, while African Heads of State and Government will consider a declaration aimed at placing water security at the centre of Africa’s sustainable development agenda.

Nguilin also highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance to the initiative, noting that President Tinubu’s participation would strengthen continental efforts to address Africa’s water challenges and promote inclusive socio-economic development.

Receiving the invitation on behalf of President Tinubu, Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed appreciation to President Déby for the special invitation and conveyed Nigeria’s warm regards to the Government and people of Chad, reaffirming the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
