Dramatic scenes unfolded within the confines of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday, marked by gunshots and the discharge of teargas canisters, as a faction of lawmakers initiated an impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

A group of approximately 23 lawmakers, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, convened to formalize the commencement of the impeachment process. In a significant move, these lawmakers also suspended Edison Ehie, the House leader, along with a number of their fellow legislators suspected of being loyal to the embattled governor.

The legislative proceedings occurred against a backdrop of heightened tension, following a destructive incident at the assembly complex on the previous night when the chamber was engulfed in flames.

Immediately after the session, which concluded with considerable unrest, the lawmakers were observed departing from the Assembly premises, with a convoy of heavily fortified security escorts.

The gunshots and the release of teargas prompted a frenzy of activity as both assembly occupants and employees located within the vicinity scrambled to find safety. Law enforcement officers pursued individuals in the aftermath of these chaotic events.
