COAS Waidi Shaibu Visits Kigali Genocide Memorial, Emphasises National Unity

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda as part of his ongoing official working visit to the country, highlighting the importance of national unity, peaceful coexistence and conflict prevention.

The visit, which took place on Monday, October 19, 2026, offered lessons on the devastating consequences of ethnic hatred, religious intolerance, divisive rhetoric and violent extremism.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial houses the remains of approximately 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers of unchecked hatred, political manipulation and national disunity.

The Nigerian Army said the visit underscored the need for Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious and political differences, reject hate speech and embrace tolerance, patriotism and collective responsibility in promoting national peace and stability.

It added that Rwanda’s tragic history highlights the importance of responsible leadership, early conflict prevention and sustained civil-military cooperation in preventing violence and building lasting peace.

The visit also reinforced the position that national unity remains a critical foundation for enduring peace, security and sustainable development.
