A serious scandal is unfolding at the Potiskum Correctional Centre in Yobe State following allegations that a correctional officer secretly impregnated a female inmate — an incident senior officials are reportedly attempting to suppress.
According to credible sources within the facility, the inmate, whose identity is being withheld for her protection, began showing signs of pregnancy earlier this month. After intense questioning by select staff members, she allegedly revealed that the pregnancy resulted from an illicit relationship with a serving correctional officer.
Rather than launch a formal investigation, insiders claim some officials immediately moved to conceal the matter to avoid public backlash and internal disciplinary action. The officer at the centre of the allegation is said to have been quietly removed from duty pending “internal resolution,” while the inmate has been isolated from others.
“This is a serious breach of ethics, yet they are trying to bury it,” a staff source disclosed. “Instead of handing the matter to the police and the Civil Defence’s investigative unit, some senior officers are protecting their own.”

Human rights advocates have condemned the alleged incident, describing it as a gross abuse of power and a violation of the inmate’s rights. They insist that a female inmate cannot, under any circumstance, give lawful consent to a prison officer due to the power imbalance.
“This is criminal,” one activist said. “The authorities must stop the cover-up and ensure transparency, accountability, and protection for the victim.”
As of now, the Nigerian Correctional Service has not issued an official statement. Pressure continues to mount on the Yobe State Command to open an independent investigation and ensure those responsible face appropriate disciplinary and legal consequences.
