Customs Intercepts 400kg of Suspected Cannabis Worth ₦2.26 Billion at Lekki Free Trade Zone

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Lekki Free Trade Zone Command, has intercepted 400 kilogrammes of suspected illicit drugs with a Duty Paid Value of ₦2.26 billion in Lagos.

The Acting Customs Area Controller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller Olufemi Kukoyi, disclosed this to journalists in Lekki, warning that the port would not be allowed to serve as a gateway for prohibited goods.

Kukoyi said the seizure followed the interception of a suspicious container, with registration number PRSU1562064, on August 19, 2026. The container was reportedly destined for a bonded terminal outside the Command’s jurisdiction.

He explained that, following concerns over potential security risks, a joint team of enforcement officers subjected the container to a thorough examination, during which 400 packages of suspected Cannabis Sativa, weighing 400 kilogrammes, were discovered concealed inside 798 reams of A4 printing paper.

The seized substance was valued at ₦2,262,960,000.

Kukoyi described the interception as a significant achievement in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse, noting that the operation would help protect Nigerians from the harmful consequences of illicit drugs.

In line with established procedures, the seized substance was formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.

Receiving the items, the Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Lekki Port Area Command, Commander Jonah Achema, said the seizure sent a strong warning to maritime drug traffickers that security agencies were intensifying their joint efforts against narcotics smuggling.

Achema described the 400-kilogramme consignment, which he said originated from Thailand, as a significant seizure. He also recalled previous interceptions at the port, including two containers of illicit pharmaceutical opioids identified as Tramadol 225 and Tramaking Royal 250.

According to him, the two containers contained a combined 46 tonnes of the drugs, with an estimated street value of ₦35 billion.

The latest interception highlights the continued collaboration between the NCS and NDLEA in strengthening port security and preventing the trafficking of prohibited substances through Nigeria’s maritime corridors.
