Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has expressed gratitude to God following her acquittal by a UK court on bribery charges, describing the legal battle as a difficult and traumatic journey that lasted nearly 11 years.
Reacting after a jury at Southwark Crown Court in London cleared her of all six counts of bribery-related offences, Alison-Madueke reflected on the personal toll the prolonged case had taken on her and those close to her.
“I did my job to the best of my ability. I am just thankful to God. It’s been a very, very arduous and long, almost 11-year journey,” she said.
The former minister noted that the experience had been painful not only for her but also for her family, friends, and supporters who stood by her throughout the legal proceedings.
“It has been traumatic, not just for me, but for my family, my friends, and all those who have stayed and supported me. For my 93-year-old mother in Port Harcourt, for my son, and for all those who love us, it has been a hard journey,” she stated.
Alison-Madueke, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources from 2010 to 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan, said her faith sustained her throughout the lengthy legal process.
“But I tell you this: God will always do as God wills, and God will be God,” she added.
The acquittal brought to a close a high-profile trial in which British prosecutors alleged that Alison-Madueke received luxury benefits from oil and gas industry figures in exchange for influence over the award of contracts in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
After hearing evidence from both the prosecution and defence, the jury returned not-guilty verdicts on all charges, ending one of the most closely watched corruption-related cases involving a former Nigerian public official in the United Kingdom.
The verdict has sparked reactions from supporters and observers, with many noting the significance of the judgment after more than a decade of investigations and legal proceedings.
