Electoral Act: Reps disagree over e-voting, result transmission

 

The Nigerian House of Representatives on Thursday was in disorder owing to the perceived misjudgment of members’ votes on the proposed electronic voting and transmission of results.

The smooth progress of the Electoral Act amendment report was witnessed until when clause 52 on the report was mentioned, then Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu proposed an amendment to the effect that the “conduct of election and transmission of results shall be done electronically”.

 

The same proposal was seconded by Deputy Whip, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, after which Deputy Speaker Idris Wase who chairs the committee of the whole put question for voice votes.

 

All hell was let loose when his ruling that the “nays have it” against the thunderous ayes.
