Elumelu Reveals $1m Investment in Afrinvest After 2008 Financial Crisis Was Repaid with Interest

Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and United Bank for Africa (UBA), has revealed that he made an unsolicited $1 million investment in Afrinvest West Africa following the 2008 global financial crisis to support the company during a difficult period.

Elumelu disclosed this after receiving a courtesy visit from Dr. Ike Chioke, Group Managing Director of Afrinvest West Africa, who led the company’s senior leadership team to thank him for his support.

According to Elumelu, the investment was made without formal documentation, agreements or specific terms. He said he requested the company’s account number, transferred the funds and told its leadership to repay the money when business conditions improved.

He explained that his decision was driven by his confidence in Chioke’s leadership, resilience and ability to steer the company through challenging economic circumstances.

Elumelu said the investment had recently been repaid with interest, describing the repayment as a demonstration of integrity and a fulfilment of the trust he had placed in the company’s leadership.

He noted that the greatest reward was not the financial return but seeing Chioke honour the trust and confidence extended to him, adding that such conduct encouraged him to continue supporting other promising individuals and businesses.

Reflecting on Afrinvest’s growth, Elumelu said he had watched the company develop into a financial services institution with more than 200 employees and six subsidiaries, contributing to job creation, business opportunities and economic value.

He also highlighted the importance of what he described as “democratising luck” by creating opportunities for others, noting that his own journey had been shaped by people who believed in him and opened doors when he needed support.

Elumelu urged individuals and businesses receiving financial backing to honour the confidence placed in them, warning that disappointing investors could discourage them from extending similar support to others in the future.

He expressed hope that the story would encourage more financially empowered Africans to invest in promising people and businesses, arguing that collective support could help build a continent defined by shared prosperity rather than wealth concentrated among a privileged few.

“Sometimes, all it takes is one person willing to believe in you, particularly when the odds seem stacked against you,” Elumelu said, emphasising the potential of trust, encouragement and timely support to transform businesses, careers and lives.

He congratulated Chioke and the Afrinvest team on their achievements, describing their journey as a reminder of what conviction, resilience and opportunity can accomplish.
