Federal Government Launches Nationwide Digital Registration of Births, Deaths

The Federal Government has officially commenced the nationwide digital registration of births and deaths under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system as part of efforts to modernise civil registration and strengthen Nigeria’s national database.

Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, announced the development during a press briefing in Abuja, describing the initiative as a major milestone in improving the country’s civil registration and vital statistics system.

According to him, the newly introduced VitalReg platform became fully operational across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory on July 1, 2026.

Dr. Yusuf explained that the digital platform is designed to ensure that every birth and death occurring in Nigeria is accurately captured through a secure, efficient and technology-driven registration process.

He disclosed that Nigeria records an estimated five million births annually, yet only about 57 per cent are officially registered, while death registration remains below 20 per cent, a situation he said has hindered national planning and denied many citizens access to legal identity.

To improve registration coverage, the NPC Chairman said the Commission has established more than 4,000 registration centres across the country’s 774 local government areas, with plans to expand the network to about 8,000 centres nationwide.

He noted that the VitalReg platform offers faster registration services, 24-hour online access, digital certificate issuance where applicable, reduced paperwork, improved data accuracy and a more secure national database.

Dr. Yusuf added that the platform is integrated into Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem and aligns with the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda.

The Commission also announced a strategic partnership involving the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies Limited to decentralise birth registration services and improve access to civil registration across communities.

He expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly improve birth and death registration nationwide, strengthen governance and provide reliable demographic data to support national planning and development.
