The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to harnessing Nigeria’s vast maritime resources as part of efforts to diversify the economy, create jobs and attract increased private sector investment.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, stated this when he received the Executive Committee of the Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO), in Abuja.
In a statement by his Special Adviser, Bolaji Akinola, the Minister said the Ministry was implementing strategic reforms to improve the ease of doing business in the maritime sector, modernise critical infrastructure and strengthen regulatory efficiency.
He added that the reforms were also aimed at deepening local content participation and attracting greater domestic and foreign investments into shipping, ports, fisheries, aquaculture, coastal tourism and other value chains within the blue economy.
Oyetola assured the delegation that the Ministry would continue to engage stakeholders across the maritime industry, stressing that sustained consultation, collaboration and shared responsibility were essential to achieving lasting reforms and unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.
Earlier, the President of AMANO, Emmanuel Maiguwa, commended the ongoing reforms in the sector and praised the Minister’s commitment to preserving the integrity, professional identity and specialised mandate of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria.
Maiguwa said the continued development of the Academy would help ensure that Nigeria produces globally competitive maritime professionals who meet international certification requirements under the conventions of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
