Nigeria Calls for Stronger, Self-Reliant African Peace, Security Architecture

Nigeria has called for a stronger, better-funded and self-reliant African peace and security architecture to address the continent’s evolving security challenges.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made the call on October 8, 2026, at the opening ceremony of the Consultative Forum on Strengthening the Functional Performance of the African Union Peace and Security Architecture in Abuja.

The minister urged African countries to take greater responsibility for resolving security challenges on the continent by strengthening regional cooperation, improving early warning systems and enhancing homegrown conflict-resolution mechanisms.

She called for stronger Continental Early Warning System mechanisms, African-led mediation initiatives and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to improve conflict prevention and promote accountability among member states.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also stressed the need to establish sustainable national peace infrastructures, improve intelligence-sharing among African countries and address the underlying causes of insecurity, including local grievances and youth unemployment.

She further highlighted the importance of community resilience in preventing conflicts and building lasting peace across the continent.

On financing, the minister emphasised the need for effective coordination between the African Union Peace Fund and international funding commitments, including those of the United Nations. She called for predictable and sustainable financing arrangements to support African Union-led peace operations.

The two-day consultative forum is expected to produce practical recommendations to improve security coordination, strengthen the financing of peace initiatives and build the capacity of African institutions to respond more effectively to the continent’s security challenges.
