The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 United Nations World Bicycle Day, reaffirming its commitment to promoting safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable transportation across Nigeria.
The event, held under the theme “Boosting Urban Life with the Bicycle,” featured a symbolic bicycle ride aimed at creating awareness on the importance of cycling as an affordable and eco-friendly means of transportation.
Speaking during the celebration, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Clement Oladele, reiterated the Corps’ dedication to encouraging safer road use while supporting initiatives that promote sustainable urban mobility and healthier lifestyles.
According to the Corps Marshal, bicycles remain a practical solution to many urban transportation challenges, offering a cost-effective, environmentally friendly and efficient mode of movement, particularly in densely populated cities.
The event also drew participation from key stakeholders and members of the public, highlighting the growing global recognition of cycling as an important component of sustainable development and climate-conscious transportation systems.
The Special Guest of Honour, Hon. Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, represented the President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Monica B. Dongban-Mensem, at the event and commended efforts aimed at promoting safer and more sustainable transport alternatives.
The celebration underscored the significance of bicycles in improving public health, reducing traffic congestion, lowering carbon emissions and enhancing the quality of urban life.
FRSC noted that it would continue to support initiatives that encourage responsible road use and safer mobility options in line with global best practices and Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.
