A Ghana Premier League player, Dominic Frimpong, has been killed following an armed robbery attack on his team’s bus while returning from an away match, authorities confirmed on Monday.
According to Berekum Chelsea FC, the incident occurred on Sunday night when masked gunmen ambushed the team along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
The club said the attackers, armed with guns and assault rifles, opened fire on the team bus, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
Police reports indicate that the attack took place around 10:30 p.m. local time. Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries during the нападение and later died in hospital while receiving treatment.
Authorities also confirmed that another victim, identified as George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of 4,500 cedis during the incident.
The Ghana Football Association described the killing as tragic, noting that Frimpong’s death is a significant loss to both his club and Ghanaian football.
“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the association said.
The 20-year-old forward had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier this year, making 13 appearances and scoring two goals.
Security agencies have launched investigations into the attack as calls grow for improved safety measures for teams travelling across the country.
