Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the first phase of a new permanent orientation camp for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth development and nation-building.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Bago described the project as a strategic investment in the future of young Nigerians, noting that the permanent camp would provide a conducive environment for corps members while enhancing the quality of orientation activities in the state.
He disclosed that the first phase of the project will occupy eight hectares of land, while an additional 20 hectares have been set aside for agricultural activities under the NYSC Farms initiative.
The governor assured that adequate funding had been secured for the project and expressed confidence that, upon completion, the Niger State NYSC permanent orientation camp would rank among the best in the country.
Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, commended the Niger State Government for the initiative, describing it as a clear demonstration of its commitment to youth empowerment, national unity, and sustainable development.
He said the modern orientation camp would significantly improve the comfort, safety, and welfare of corps members while serving as a hub for youth empowerment and community development.
Brig. Gen. Nafiu expressed appreciation to Governor Bago for his unwavering support for the NYSC and for committing the necessary resources to the construction of the permanent camp.
He noted that Niger State has become the fourth state, after Lagos, Adamawa, and Gombe, to embark on the development of a modern orientation camp for corps members.
The NYSC Director-General also urged the contractor handling the project to adhere strictly to the agreed timeline and maintain the highest standards of quality throughout the construction process.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, lauded Governor Bago for initiating the project and pledged the legislature’s full support to ensure its successful completion.
Providing details of the project, the contractor, Mr. Stephen Adigun, said the camp is designed to accommodate about 5,000 corps members, with room for future expansion.
According to him, the facility will comprise 41 hostel blocks, each containing 20 rooms with six-bed capacity per room, alongside a 3,000-seat multipurpose hall, administrative offices, sports and recreational facilities, a perimeter fence, a clinic, and other essential infrastructure.
He assured stakeholders of his firm’s commitment to delivering the project on schedule without compromising quality.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Niger State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Dr. Nuhu Ngaski, and the Emir of Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu, who spoke on behalf of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, commended the governor for the landmark initiative.
They pledged their continued support for programmes and projects aimed at improving the lives of citizens and advancing youth development across the state.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks another significant milestone in the Niger State Government’s efforts to strengthen youth development infrastructure and provide corps members with a modern, secure, and conducive environment for national service.
