The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has lauded the completion of a state-of-the-art television studio at the headquarters of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the ongoing renovation of the National Press Centre in Abuja, describing the projects as key milestones in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s drive to modernise Nigeria’s public information infrastructure.
Speaking on Monday after inspecting the facilities, the minister said the projects underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning government-owned media organisations to deliver high-quality public service broadcasting and credible information to Nigerians.
“What we have seen today is the fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to modernise Nigeria’s public broadcasting facilities. This is one of the best television studios in Nigeria and among the finest on the African continent,” Idris said.
He explained that the newly completed Network News Studio at the NTA forms part of a broader modernisation programme covering key federal media organisations, including the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), the Voice of Nigeria (VON), and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The minister commended the management and staff of the NTA for their support in implementing the transformation agenda, noting that the reforms extend beyond infrastructure to include improved content development, professionalism, innovation, and human capacity building.
According to him, the procurement of modern broadcasting equipment for NTA stations across the country, alongside similar investments in other federal media organisations, will significantly enhance public service broadcasting nationwide.
Idris also described the recently relaunched Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme as another major milestone that complements the ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s broadcasting industry.
“The Digital Switch Over and the investments in modern broadcast infrastructure are opening a new chapter for Nigeria’s information sector. By the time this reform programme is completed, Nigerians will witness a truly transformed public broadcasting system,” he stated.
The minister further disclosed that President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to improving the welfare of workers in the information sector, stressing that sustainable reforms require investments in both infrastructure and personnel.
Following the inspection of the NTA facilities, Idris visited the National Press Centre at Radio House, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of the ongoing renovation.
He said the upgraded National Press Centre would become a modern media hub equipped with world-class facilities and high-speed internet connectivity to support journalists covering government activities and national events.
“The National Press Centre must fulfil its mandate as Nigeria’s foremost media hub. It is being redesigned to provide journalists with a conducive environment and modern facilities to carry out their professional responsibilities effectively,” he said.
The minister urged contractors handling the project to ensure its timely completion, assuring that he would return for a final inspection ahead of its commissioning.
He reaffirmed that the ongoing upgrades across government-owned media institutions reflect the Tinubu administration’s commitment to strengthening public communication, promoting credible information dissemination, and positioning Nigeria’s information sector to meet global broadcasting standards.
