Governor Uba Sani Advocates State Police, Calls for Constitutional Safeguards

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has reiterated his support for the establishment of State Police, describing it as a critical component of a more effective and responsive national security architecture capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

The governor made the call on Wednesday while delivering the keynote address at the National Security Roundtable on Constitutional Reform and the Establishment of State Police Services, organised by the National Assembly Library Trust Fund in Abuja.

The event brought together security experts, lawmakers, constitutional scholars, policymakers and other stakeholders to deliberate on proposed constitutional reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

Speaking at the forum, Governor Uba Sani said the creation of State Police must go beyond constitutional amendments and focus on building institutions founded on professionalism, accountability, operational independence and strong constitutional safeguards.

He stressed that State Police should complement, rather than replace, the Nigeria Police Force, with both institutions operating within a coordinated framework that promotes collaboration, intelligence sharing and clearly defined constitutional responsibilities.

According to him, the proposed policing system should be supported by nationally standardised recruitment and training processes, technology-driven policing, independent oversight mechanisms and sustainable funding to ensure efficiency and public confidence.

Drawing from Kaduna State’s experience in tackling insecurity, the governor noted that sustainable peace is built on trust, dialogue, community participation, inclusion and intelligence-led policing.

He expressed confidence that a carefully structured State Police system would deepen Nigeria’s federal system of government, strengthen democratic governance and significantly improve the protection of lives and property across the country.

Governor Uba Sani also commended the organisers of the roundtable, describing the engagement as timely and essential in addressing Nigeria’s increasingly complex and multidimensional security challenges through practical constitutional and institutional reforms.
