The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has described renowned Nigerian artist and cultural ambassador Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, popularly known as Mama Nike, as a national treasure whose lifelong contributions continue to shape generations of Nigerian creatives.
During a visit to the Nike Art Gallery in Abuja, the minister said the visit reaffirmed the immense impact of the veteran artist on the preservation and promotion of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
Musawa noted that Mama Nike’s dedication to nurturing artistic talent and preserving indigenous art has inspired countless artists across the country and beyond.
She also revealed that the visit formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy and the Nike Art Gallery, adding that details of the partnership would be unveiled in due course.
“I was reminded once again of the extraordinary legacy she has built for Nigerian art and culture. Her life’s work has inspired generations of artists, and I remain deeply grateful for the love, wisdom and unwavering support she has always shown me,” the minister said.
Musawa expressed delight at interacting with students undergoing training at the gallery, describing their creativity, enthusiasm and passion as a strong indication of a bright future for Nigeria’s creative industry.
She said investing in young creatives remains central to the Federal Government’s efforts to unlock the enormous potential of the country’s cultural and creative sectors under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting institutions and individuals dedicated to preserving Nigeria’s artistic heritage while creating opportunities for emerging talents to thrive on the global stage.
She described the Nike Art Gallery as one of Nigeria’s foremost cultural institutions and pledged continued support for initiatives that celebrate and preserve the nation’s rich artistic legacy.
