Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to AU Peace, Security Agenda

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the African Union’s peace, security and regional integration agenda following a meeting between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, and a high-level delegation of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC).

The delegation, led by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Nasir Aminu, who currently chairs the AU Peace and Security Council for June 2026, also included the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye.

The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tafawa Balewa House, Abuja, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, following the conclusion of the Third Annual Joint Consultative Meeting between the AU Peace and Security Council and the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council held in Abuja.

Welcoming the delegation, Ambassador Enikanolaiye expressed appreciation for their congratulatory messages on his appointment and reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to promoting the African Union’s objectives of peace, security, democracy, good governance and regional integration.

He described the AU Peace and Security Council as one of Africa’s most important institutions for conflict prevention, peacebuilding and political governance, stressing that Nigeria attaches the highest priority to the Council’s work.

The minister also commended the growing collaboration between the AU Peace and Security Council and ECOWAS, noting that regular consultations have become an effective platform for strengthening coordination between continental and regional institutions in responding to Africa’s evolving security challenges.

Enikanolaiye further stated that Nigeria has continued to deepen its diplomatic engagement with the African Union, particularly through its mission in Addis Ababa, and reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote stronger cooperation between the African Union, Regional Economic Communities and other regional mechanisms in addressing peace and security issues across the continent.
