Somali-born American politician and Democratic Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, has celebrated her re-election to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives with members of the Somali-American community in Minneapolis.

Omar was seen dancing to traditional Somali music alongside Somali artist Qeys Ilkacase at Karmel Mall in Minneapolis, where supporters gathered to celebrate her victory.

Ilhan Omar was born on October 4, 1982, in Mogadishu, Somalia. She and her family fled the Somali civil war when she was eight years old and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before relocating to the United States in the 1990s. Her family settled in Minneapolis in 1997.

She made history in 2018 when she was elected to the US House of Representatives, becoming the first African refugee to serve in the US Congress and one of the first two Muslim women elected to the House. She previously served in the Minnesota State Legislature from 2017 to 2019.

According to unofficial results released by Minnesota election authorities, Omar secured 262,702 votes, representing 76.48 per cent of the total votes cast, defeating Republican challenger John Nagel to retain her seat.

Her victory marks another milestone in her political career and extends her representation of Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis and surrounding communities.
