Kano Launches Northern CNG, EV Programme, Unveils New Fuel Stations Along Kano–Zaria Road

The Kano State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government and private sector partners, has officially launched the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) programme across Northern Nigeria, alongside the commissioning of new refuelling infrastructure in Kano.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf led the launch at the Kano Indoor Stadium, alongside a representative of the Vice President, Senator Hassan Hadejia, and the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG and EV, Barr. Ismaeel Ahmad.

As part of the event, the delegation also commissioned the Asad CNG and Greenville LNG stations located along the Kano–Zaria Road, marking a key expansion of alternative energy infrastructure in the region.

Governor Yusuf said the initiative would unlock significant economic opportunities across the CNG and EV value chain, including refuelling services, vehicle conversion centres, technical training, logistics, assembly, and manufacturing.

He noted that the programme is expected to create employment for young people in the state, many of whom have already undergone training in vehicle conversion and technical maintenance.

The Governor reaffirmed Kano State’s readiness to partner with the Federal Government, the Pi-CNG and EV initiative, and credible private investors to expand clean energy infrastructure across the state.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the initiative, describing it as a strategic response to transportation challenges and rising fuel costs in the country.

Representing the Vice President, Senator Hassan Hadejia said the North stands to benefit significantly from the programme due to its large transportation network and high vehicle usage, which makes it ideal for large-scale CNG adoption.

He also praised the Kano State Government for providing an enabling environment for the project even before its full rollout.

The Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG & EV, Barr. Ismaeel Ahmad, said the initiative was designed to provide cheaper and cleaner alternatives to petrol, following the removal of fuel subsidy.

He announced that CNG stations would be established across all senatorial districts in Kano to ensure wider access and encourage mass adoption of alternative fuel solutions.

The programme is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s transition toward cleaner energy, reduce transportation costs, and stimulate industrial growth in the automotive and energy sectors.
