Kenya has announced expanded progress in local manufacturing of mobile phones, computers, and other digital devices as part of a broader push to strengthen its technology and industrial capacity.
President William Ruto made the disclosure at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, where he highlighted ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, including the rollout of approximately 30,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable across the country.
He said Kenya is advancing efforts to position itself as a regional technology hub through increased local production of digital tools and stronger investment in innovation-driven sectors.
Government officials noted that Kenya already operates an electronics assembly facility in Machakos, where mobile phones are assembled for the domestic market, marking an early step in the country’s broader manufacturing ambitions.
While experts note that device assembly differs from full-scale manufacturing of components, the development is being viewed as a significant milestone in Africa’s industrial and technological transformation agenda.
Kenya has also expanded its focus on STEM education, with reports indicating that a majority of its education reforms now prioritize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to support future industrial capacity.
The move aligns with wider continental efforts to reduce reliance on imported technology and strengthen local production ecosystems across Africa.
Other African countries, including Rwanda and Ethiopia, have also made advances in technology-driven manufacturing, reflecting a growing regional shift toward industrialization and digital self-reliance.
The development has sparked renewed discussions on ownership, investment, and value retention within Africa’s emerging tech manufacturing sector, as governments seek to balance foreign investment with local control and long-term economic benefits.
