King Charles III has honoured 68 individuals at a star-studded investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle, with acclaimed British actor Idris Elba among the recipients.
The 53-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Luther and numerous Hollywood productions, was awarded a knighthood in recognition of his services to young people through the elbahopefoundation.org, which he founded to support and empower disadvantaged youths.
The ceremony also recognised several distinguished figures from the worlds of entertainment and sport. Actress Meera Syal received a damehood for her contributions to the arts, while Olympic ice dancing legends Christopher Dean and Jayne Torvill were also honoured for their achievements and services to sport.
Veteran comedian Paul Elliott, popularly known as one half of the Chuckle Brothers, was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his charitable work. The 78-year-old entertainer described his conversation with the King as “really good” and revealed he briefly considered referencing the comedy duo’s famous catchphrase while receiving his medal but ultimately decided against it.
Meanwhile, Sir Christopher Dean shared a light-hearted moment with the monarch, joking that he was enjoying retirement and would “recommend it.” He and Dame Jayne Torvill became global sporting icons after winning Olympic gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics with their historic “Bolero” performance.
Speaking after the ceremony, Dame Jayne said King Charles asked whether the pair were still skating and told her he was pleased to recognise their accomplishments.
The investiture ceremony celebrated individuals from a wide range of fields, highlighting achievements in public service, sport, entertainment, charity, and community development. Idris Elba’s knighthood was among the most prominent honours of the day, recognising both his successful acting career and his efforts to create opportunities for young people.
