In an internal circular circulating among staff and students at the University of Abuja, the management has taken a firm stance by cancelling all signing-out celebrations within the school, accompanied by stern warnings for those who defy this directive.

While signing-out celebrations are a common tradition in universities in Nigeria and globally, the recent tragic incident has prompted the university to halt such activities due to the severity of the consequences, underlining the need for caution during such events.

This decision comes on the heels of a heartbreaking incident that plunged the university community into mourning. The incident resulted in the untimely death of Michael Angelo, a 400-level student, who tragically fell off a moving car while celebrating his completion of studies at the university.

New information available suggests that the driver of the car had initially cautioned Michael as he perched on the car’s boot, falling off the first time. “Unfortunately, he climbed back without the driver’s knowledge. Subsequently, as the car moved, both Michael and another individual (whose name remains unknown) fell off. While the other person promptly got up, Michael remained incapacitated. He was rushed to the specialist hospital, where he was later pronounced dead,” a coursemate, who had asked Michael to wait for him to refuel his car before joining in the celebration, reported these details.

Michael’s father, residing in Lagos, has been notified and is currently enroute to Abuja.
