Midday Naps Boost Children’s Academic Performance, Behaviour — Study

A growing body of research has found that a simple midday nap could significantly improve children’s academic performance, emotional well-being, and behaviour, offering a low-cost strategy for enhancing learning outcomes.

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Irvine revealed that children who take naps for 30 to 60 minutes at least three times a week tend to perform better in school and exhibit improved emotional stability.

The findings, published in the scientific journal SLEEP, followed nearly 3,000 students aged between 10 and 12 over a three-year period, from Grade 4 through Grade 6. Researchers tracked key indicators including mood, behaviour, intelligence levels, and academic performance, using reports provided directly by teachers.

According to the study, children who maintained regular napping habits recorded a 7.6 per cent increase in academic performance by Grade 6 compared to their peers who did not nap consistently.

Beyond academics, the research also found that napping was associated with higher levels of happiness, improved self-control, increased resilience (grit), and fewer behavioural problems. In addition, children who napped regularly demonstrated higher verbal intelligence scores.

Researchers noted that midday naps present a practical and accessible intervention for improving child development outcomes. Unlike other educational reforms, such as adjusting school start times, naps require no additional funding and can be easily incorporated into daily routines.

The study’s authors emphasized that in increasingly demanding academic environments, allowing children time to rest may be just as important as structured learning.

Experts say the findings reinforce the need for parents, caregivers, and educators to rethink daily schedules and recognise rest as a critical component of a child’s overall development.
