Doctors in China Successfully Rebuild Patient’s Spine Using 3D-Printed Titanium Implant

Surgeons at the Peking University Third Hospital have carried out a groundbreaking spinal reconstruction surgery, removing a damaged section of a patient’s spine and replacing it with a custom-designed 3D-printed titanium implant.

The procedure involved the removal of 19 centimetres of the spine after a rare cancer known as chordoma destroyed five vertebrae. The surgical team then reconstructed the area using a patient-specific implant designed to match the exact structure of the missing bone.

The six-hour operation was led by orthopedic specialist Liu Zhongjun, who serves as Chief Orthopedic Surgeon at the hospital.

Remarkably, the patient showed rapid recovery progress, standing without support within two weeks and walking independently out of the hospital just ten weeks after surgery.

According to medical reports, the titanium implant was created using advanced 3D-printing technology to replicate the patient’s anatomy with high precision. The mesh structure is designed to integrate with the body over time, allowing natural bone tissue to grow around it and gradually strengthen spinal stability.

Medical researchers involved in the development explained that the approach represents a major advancement in reconstructive surgery, particularly for complex spinal tumours where traditional reconstruction methods are limited.

Similar procedures conducted in China have shown promising early results, with patients experiencing restored spinal function and reduced implant failure rates.

Experts say the breakthrough reflects a growing shift in modern medicine toward personalised implants and regenerative surgical techniques, where replacement body structures can be custom-built for individual patients.

While still an evolving field, the success of such surgeries is being viewed as a significant step forward in orthopaedic and cancer-related spinal care, offering renewed hope for patients with previously inoperable conditions.
