MMIA Customs Acting Controller Assesses Officers’ Readiness, Emphasises Discipline
The Acting Customs Area Controller at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Deputy Comptroller of Customs Jacob Onele, has assessed the operational readiness of officers and men under his command, stressing discipline, professionalism and inter-agency collaboration.
Onele made this know during a familiarisation visit to strategic operational units at the airport, where he reviewed officers’ performance and welfare while listening to their challenges.
Addressing personnel of the Anti-Money Laundering Unit and Baggage Operations, the acting controller expressed satisfaction with their performance but urged them to sustain vigilance, discipline and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
“Based on my assessment, I can grade my officers nine out of 10 because nobody is perfect. From the day I took over as Acting Customs Area Controller, I told them that discipline is non-negotiable, and so far, they have lived up to that expectation,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of proactive surveillance and effective communication with sister security agencies, noting that intelligence-sharing and coordinated enforcement operations are essential to safeguarding the nation’s borders through the airport.
Onele also urged officers to maintain high standards of conduct when dealing with passengers, describing them as representatives of Nigeria at a major international gateway.
“You are the gateway to the country. You must dress neatly and project Nigeria the right way. Do not engage in any inappropriate act, as your conduct defines how the country is perceived,” he warned.
He further highlighted the role of the Simplified Customs Advance Declaration System (SCADS) in facilitating faster clearance of items, urging officers to ensure its effective application in their operations.
The familiarisation tour also covered the VVIP Fast-Track Section, the Currency Declaration Unit and the Terminal 2 Departure Hall. During the visit, Onele engaged representatives of sister security agencies, underscoring his commitment to strengthening inter-agency cooperation and improving operational efficiency at the airport.
