The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to reject voter apathy, vote buying and electoral violence, urging eligible citizens to participate peacefully in the 2027 general election and protect the country’s democratic process.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the call on Thursday in Abuja during the flag-off of the National Orientation Agency’s (NOA) nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign for the 2027 general election.
The campaign is themed “Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Future: Say No to Apathy, Vote Buying and Violence. Let’s Build a United Nigeria in 2027.”
Idris described elections as an opportunity for citizens to choose their representatives and influence the direction of their communities and the country, warning that voter apathy, vote buying and violence undermine democratic participation.
He said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process and improving public confidence in elections.
The minister also cited the Electoral Act 2026, which he said introduced reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability and confidence in the electoral process.
Idris commended the Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, and the agency’s staff for initiating the campaign, stressing that its success would depend on collaboration among government institutions, electoral authorities, security agencies, community leaders and citizens.
In his remarks, Issa-Onilu said the agency would deploy its state directorates across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take the campaign to communities nationwide.
He explained that the mobilisation would use local languages, radio programmes, community dialogues, drama and digital platforms to encourage voter participation, discourage vote buying and electoral violence, and promote the responsible sharing of verified information.
“The National Orientation Agency will take this campaign to communities across the country, engaging Nigerians in languages they understand to promote voter participation, discourage vote buying and electoral violence, and encourage the responsible sharing of verified information,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a credible and inclusive 2027 general election.
He emphasised the importance of early preparation, cooperation among stakeholders and active citizen participation in ensuring peaceful elections.
“INEC is committed to conducting a free, fair, transparent, inclusive and credible 2027 General Election. Achieving this requires early preparation, strong collaboration among stakeholders and the active participation of Nigerians,” Amupitan said.
The NOA campaign aims to encourage Nigerians to participate responsibly in the electoral process, respect differing political choices and reject actions that threaten lives, national unity and democratic stability.
