Naval Commander Charges Officers on Implementation of CNS Strategic Directives

The Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Chiedozie Donald Okehie, has charged commanding officers of the Nigerian Navy to translate strategic directives into effective operational outcomes at the unit and ship levels.

Okehie gave the charge while delivering a lecture titled “Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Strategic Directives: Implications for Commanding Officers (COs)” to participants of Command Level Officers’ Course 9 at the Naval War College Nigeria (NWCN).

The lecture, held at the College Auditorium, examined the strategic objectives behind the CNS directives and the responsibilities of commanding officers in translating them into operational effectiveness.

The FOC explained that the directives provide a framework for aligning naval operations, training, administration and resource management with Nigeria’s maritime security priorities.

He emphasised that commanding officers play a critical role in achieving these objectives through effective leadership, sound decision-making and mission-focused execution.

Okehie highlighted practical approaches to implementing the directives, including leading by personal example, prioritising personnel welfare, correcting shortcomings promptly, recognising good performance and adopting innovative solutions to operational challenges.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining a sound understanding of onboard equipment, continuous training, prudent resource management and personnel mentorship to sustain crew morale, improve safety and enhance operational readiness.

According to him, the effectiveness of the CNS Strategic Directives depends largely on how well they are implemented at the unit level, where daily administrative and operational decisions directly influence mission outcomes.

The lecture provided participants with insights into the relationship between strategic planning and tactical execution, reinforcing the responsibility of commanding officers to align their daily activities with the Nigerian Navy’s broader strategic objectives.
