A Niger State court has sentenced Aliyu Bala to 13 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter.
The court also ordered the convict to receive 20 strokes of the cane and pay ₦250,000 in compensation to the victim.
Following the judgment, authorities took Bala to the Hakimi Palace in Bosso, where the corporal punishment was publicly administered in the presence of community members.
The Director-General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, Barrister Ummul-kalthume Muhammad, described the development as an unprecedented step in demonstrating the government’s determination to protect children and ensure that perpetrators of sexual offences face the consequences of their actions.
She said the public enforcement was intended to send a strong warning to individuals who may believe they can sexually abuse children and escape justice.
The Director-General also urged communities to stop shielding or concealing perpetrators, stressing the importance of reporting suspected cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities.
A representative of the Niger State Ministry of Justice, Shafa, described the judgment as significant and potentially influential in the handling of similar cases. She encouraged members of the public to report suspected child abuse rather than allowing offenders to evade justice.
According to her, the victim’s mother initially considered withdrawing the case but later decided to allow the legal process to continue after understanding the importance of seeking justice for her daughter and holding the accused accountable.
The Hakimi of Bosso, Malam Muazu Adamu Laka, said he had never witnessed such a judgment being publicly enforced in the community.
He welcomed the development, noting that it would help reinforce public awareness of the seriousness of child sexual abuse and serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.
The case has renewed calls for parents, traditional rulers and community leaders to remain vigilant and take decisive action whenever there are allegations or signs of child abuse.
The Niger State Child Rights Agency stressed that the punishment goes beyond the individual offender, describing it as a broader warning that perpetrators of crimes against children will be pursued and brought to justice.
Child abuse should never be ignored or covered up. Anyone who suspects that a child is being abused should promptly report the matter to the Niger State Child Rights Agency, the police, or another appropriate child-protection authority.
