The Federal Ministry of Education has announced a new partnership with the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) aimed at modernising and expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across Nigeria.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed the collaboration during an official visit to UDST, where he was received by the university’s President, Dr. Salem Al-Naemi, and other senior leaders.

During the visit, Dr. Alausa toured UDST’s internationally recognised Certificate School, known for its competency-based TVET programs and strong alignment with industry needs. He commended the university’s focus on practical training, workplace readiness, and globally accredited certifications—key components of Nigeria’s ongoing skills development reforms.

Dr. Alausa announced that Nigeria and UDST will collaborate in three strategic areas:

1. Faculty Exchange & Train-the-Trainer Programs

Both institutions will strengthen Nigeria’s technical teaching workforce through specialised capacity-building programs. Nigerian instructors and master trainers will receive advanced training in:

  • Plumbing
  • Welding
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning)
  • Electrical Installation
  • Solar Photovoltaic Technology

This initiative is expected to significantly upgrade the quality of technical instruction to global standards.

2. Quality Assurance & International Certification Standards

UDST will support Nigeria in developing a robust quality assurance framework that ensures TVET certificates, diplomas, and degrees issued by Nigerian institutions meet international benchmarks.
The goal is to make Nigerian technical qualifications globally recognised, especially across North America and Europe.

3. Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Business Incubation

Nigeria will also partner with UDST’s entrepreneurship and innovation centres to empower young Nigerians to become:

  • Micro-entrepreneurs
  • Small and large-scale business owners
  • High-growth innovators, including potential unicorn-level enterprises

Through incubation programs and innovation support, the partnership aims to stimulate job creation and youth-driven enterprise development.

Dr. Alausa noted that the collaboration underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to building a highly skilled, globally competitive, and industry-ready workforce capable of accelerating Nigeria’s economic transformation. He reaffirmed that Nigeria remains committed to modernising its TVET ecosystem, expanding opportunities for young people, and aligning national skills development with international best practices.
