Nigeria has commenced capacity-building training for 100 members of its Mutual Evaluation Working Groups ahead of the country’s forthcoming third-round assessment on anti-money laundering, counter-financing of terrorism and counter-proliferation financing.
The training is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s preparedness for the assessment and establishing a common understanding of the methodology to be used during the national Mock Mutual Evaluation Exercise.
According to a statement by the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Hafsat Bakari, the exercise is being organised by the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) in collaboration with the NFIU.
The statement emphasised that Nigeria must demonstrate not only the strength of its legal and institutional frameworks but also their effectiveness in practice through credible evidence of results.
Representing the Director-General of GIABA, Giwa Siman Sechap, the Director of Evaluations and Compliance at the GIABA Secretariat, stressed the importance of a shared understanding of the mutual evaluation methodology and reliable evidence of implementation.
Similarly, Professor Shehu Abdullahi, representing SecFIN Africa, highlighted the need for sustained capacity development and stronger collaboration among relevant institutions to achieve the country’s objectives.
The exercise forms part of Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework ahead of the forthcoming mutual evaluation.
