Nigerian Army Commissions 10-Unit Senior Officers’ Quarters in Gusau to Boost Troops’ Welfare

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General B.P. Koughna, has commissioned a newly constructed 10-unit Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) residential quarters at the Nigerian Army Cantonment, Headquarters 1 Brigade, Gusau, Zamfara State, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare and living conditions of personnel.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, marked another milestone in the Nigerian Army’s commitment to providing decent and conducive accommodation for soldiers and their families.

The housing project was initiated and completed by the Commander, 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General M. Jimoh, as part of broader welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing troop morale, comfort and operational effectiveness.

Speaking at the event, Major General Koughna commended Brigadier General Jimoh for his vision, dedication and commitment to improving the welfare of personnel under his command.

The GOC described the project as a significant achievement that aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s (COAS) Soldiers First Command Philosophy, which prioritises the well-being of soldiers and the creation of an enabling environment for them to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

He noted that quality accommodation remains a vital component of troop welfare, stressing that improved living conditions contribute to higher morale, stronger unit cohesion and enhanced operational readiness.

Major General Koughna also urged the beneficiaries to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to preserve the value and longevity of the investment.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commander 1 Brigade, Brigadier General M. Jimoh, explained that the project was conceived in recognition of the important roles played by Senior Non-Commissioned Officers in the Nigerian Army.

He said the successful completion of the quarters reflected the Brigade’s commitment to improving personnel welfare and supporting the vision of the GOC and the Chief of Army Staff.

According to him, the new accommodation would significantly improve the standard of living of beneficiaries, while strengthening their sense of belonging, commitment and dedication to duty.

The completion of the project further demonstrates the Nigerian Army’s continued efforts to provide better infrastructure, enhance troop welfare and improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of its formations.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior military officers, including Major General U.G. Ogeleka, Major General S.A. Emmanuel, Brigadier General N. Mbaka, Principal Staff Officers from the Theatre Command and 1 Brigade, as well as soldiers and invited guests.

Highlights of the event included a project presentation by the site supervisor, the symbolic commissioning of the facility, presentation of keys to beneficiaries, exchange of plaques and group photographs to mark the occasion.
