The Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria, on Thursday, July 30, 2026, held its 2025/2026 Academic Session Beating of the Retreat Ceremony, marking the successful completion of the academic year and the transition of graduating SS3 students to the next stage of their lives.
The ceremony brought together senior military officers, school officials, alumni, parents, invited guests and friends of the institution to celebrate the achievements of the graduating students and uphold one of the Nigerian military’s longstanding traditions.
In his welcome address, the Commandant of NMS, Brigadier General ON Ejiga, described the Beating of the Retreat as a cherished military tradition symbolising discipline, honour, loyalty and selfless service.
He urged the graduating students to remain worthy ambassadors of the Nigerian Military School by upholding the values of integrity, courage, discipline and excellence instilled in them throughout their training.
The Commandant also expressed appreciation to the Special Guest of Honour, Major General PP Malla, Commander, Training and Doctrine Command, Nigerian Army, as well as alumni, parents and other stakeholders for their continued support towards the development of the institution.
Speaking at the ceremony, Major General Malla reflected on his personal journey from being a Boy Soldier at NMS to attaining his current position in the Nigerian Army. He attributed his achievements to the discipline, resilience and patriotism he acquired during his formative years at the school.
He charged the graduating students to remain committed to hard work, avoid shortcuts and uphold the ideals of the institution as they advance into the next phase of their lives.
Major General Malla also commended the officers, instructors, staff and parents for their dedication to moulding the students into disciplined and responsible citizens capable of providing leadership and service to the nation.
The event featured the traditional Beating of the Retreat, lowering of the National Colours and other ceremonial activities, reflecting the military heritage and traditions of the Nigerian Military School.
The ceremony marked not only the conclusion of the academic session but also the beginning of a new chapter for the graduating students, who were encouraged to carry the discipline, courage and values acquired at NMS into their future endeavours.
