Nigerian Qur’an Reciter Wins International Competition, Gets NAHCON recognition

A Nigerian female Qur’an reciter, Hajara Ibrahim Dan’azumi, has won the first prize at an international Qur’anic competition held in Jordan. She also received a Hajj seat for 2024 from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The competition, which was the 18th edition of the Hashemite Jordan International Qur’anic Competition for Females, took place from February 17 to 22, 2024. It was organized by the Jordanian Ministry of Endowments, Islamic Affairs, and Holy Places. Hajara Dan’azumi competed in the 60 Hizb with Tajwid category, which requires the recitation of the entire Qur’an with proper pronunciation and rules. She scored 99.5% and beat 39 other contestants from different countries.

Hajara Dan’azumi is a 19-year-old student of Abubakar Siddiq Community Islamic School in Gombe state. She is also studying Botany at the Gombe State University. She was congratulated by the NAHCON Chairman, Malam Jalal Ahmad Arabi, who praised her exceptional performance and awarded her a Hajj seat for 2024. The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.

The Gombe state Governor, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, also celebrated Hajara Dan’azumi’s achievement and hosted a special reception for her at the Government House on March 7, 2024. He gave her a cash prize of five million Naira and a full scholarship from degree to Ph.D. He also donated another five million Naira to her Islamic school to improve its operations and students’ training.

The NAHCON Chairman said that rewarding Hajara Dan’azumi’s excellence was part of his tradition of encouraging hard work and promoting the values of Islam. He expressed his hope that her success would inspire others to follow her example and represent Nigeria well in the global arena.
